First Quarter 2019 Our school year begins with a brief review of our summer reading of The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Students are asked to complete various tasks during their summer months which included artwork, written reflection, and character analyses. The most important, engaging, and valuable lesson involving our study of this novel is our lengthy discussion regarding stereotypes. Living in a society of instant (and constant) judgement, our young people were asked to consider, evaluate, and express how and why this aspect of our culture exists. It is an extremely significant exercise for our students and one to which we will refer on numerous occasions throughout the year.
